Best Practice No.1

Title of the practice: Distribution of food packets to patient relatives at J.J. Hospital, Byculla

Objectives of the Practice:

  • Understand the importance of community service in health care settings.
  • Recognize the impact of food distribution initiatives on patient families in the hospital
  • Appreciate the role of empathy and compassion in volunteering

The Context: The college runs activities that develop students’ character, ethics and understanding of societal norms.  For this purpose the college engages student in various community service projects.  These activities expose students to diverse societal needs and instill a sense of social responsibility and empathy.

All the students are the participants of NSS.  So through NSS the institution participate in distributing food packets in JJ hospital

Therefore one of the college distinctive programs is distribution of food packets in JJ Hospital.  Volunteering this activity the students learn about compassion and the importance of those in need.  The students run this activity in collaboration with Haji Abdul Latif Charitable Trust’s.

The Practice: The students of Aishabai College of Education in collaboration with Haji Abdul Latif Charitable Trust’s work on the food distribution at the JJ Hospital.  The students visited the hospital from 28th February to 14th March, 2024.  The group of 5 members of NSS Volunteers every day went at the place of distribution of food from college around 12pm to 1:30pm at the JJ Hospital cafeteria.

At the beginning the students reached at the place of JJ food cafeteria at 12 pm. The line of the patient relative is formed by the NSS Volunteer and for the food distribution process they collect the coupon card which is provided to them. For 1 coupon, 1 food packet is provided and If they were having the 2 coupons the volunteer provided 2 boxes of food packets.  During distribution of these food packets our volunteers interacts with the people and collect the information of their patient health and problems.

The volunteers provides a comforting embrace during challenging times. The aim of the students is not just sharing a food, but also love and support, as they walk alongside these families on their  journey.

Evidence of success: Students distributed the food packets, communicated with the relatives and developed a sense of empathy in them.  Now here it is the affective domain which is getting developed. So for the evidence purpose the students have taken geotag photos and they are attached to the report.  Also, after returning from J.J. Hospital the students while sharing their experiences we come to know the attachment bond formed.

Problems encountered and resources required: Everyday a particular group goes to J.J.Hospital for food distribution from 12.00 pm to 1.30 Pm.  This is the regular college timings of the college and the students missed the activities for that time.  But the food packets distribution should also be done at the mentioned time or else it is of no use.  Hence the teachers have to give extra time to complete the activities from the students.  So this problem is solved at college level.

For this activity resource required are the food packets and this are provided by the trust everyday.

Problems encountered and resources required:

To implement such an activity for whole batch is a big task and definitely problems arise.  But proper planning helps to get rid of problems.  All the workshops, activities, guest lectures, skill development programmes, Inauguration ceremony, valedictory function are properly planned.  Permissions are taken from school prior only and this helps for smooth functioning of the camp.

Resources such as teaching aids, various other aids which support teaching-learning process for special children are required.  For this the students have skill development programmes they make different aids and use them.  Workshops and guest lectures are organized which helps them to deal with the special children.
